WEEK 18 - SOCIAL STUDIES - BOLIVIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

Bolivian Independence Day

This year, we remember 195 years since Bolivia became an independent country.

Before becoming independent, Bolivia's name was "Alto Perú" (Upper Peru).

Upper Peru was under the ruling of the Spanish Empire, just like other countries in South America, except for Brazil.
Simón Bolivar and Antonio José de Sucre wanted to liberate and free the countries from the Spanish.

"The Liberator" Simón Bolívar was a Venezuelan military and political leader who led Bolivia and other countries to independence from the Spanish Empire.

After they won the battles of Junin and Ayacucho, Bolivia's independence was proclaimed on 6 August, 1825 at a congress in Chuquisaca.

Bolivia is named after Simón Bolívar.

"If from Romulus, Rome; from Bolívar, it is Bolivia".

The country's official name was "Republic of Bolivia"
Bolivia has 9 departments.

The first president of Bolivia was Simón Bolívar, but only for a few months.
The second president of Bolivia was Antonio José de Sucre.
In 2009, the country's name changed to "Plurinational State of Bolivia".
