SHORT AND LONG VOWELS

Short vowels

Short vowels are words that have one vowel, either at the beginning or berween two consonants. They do not have to finish in: y, nd, w or ght.

Rule 1
When a word has two vowels, usually the first vowel says its name and the second vowel is silent.

When there are two vowels together, usually the first vowel says its name and the second vowel is silent.

Rule 3
When there is one vowel but, the word finish in: y, nd, w or ght.
